The Borno State Police Command has arrested five individuals for allegedly processing and selling meat from dead cattle to unsuspecting residents in Maiduguri.
According to the police, the suspects were apprehended on July 29 during an operation carried out by the Command's Violent Crime Response Unit (Crack Squad) following credible intelligence.
Police spokesperson Nahum Daso identified the suspects as Modu Umar (43), Abba Mohammed (24), Adam Abubakar (21), Faruq Gambo (19), and Mada Usman (24).
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects allegedly obtained cattle that had died naturally, butchered the carcasses, and supplied the meat to roadside vendors for public sale. Officers reportedly intercepted the suspects while they were transporting the carcass of a dead cow to the Morumti area of Maiduguri for further processing and distribution.
The suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue to uncover the full scope of the operation, identify additional suspects, and trace the distribution network. They are expected to face prosecution after investigations are completed.
Borno State Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid described the alleged activity as a serious threat to public health. He assured residents that the police would continue working with relevant government agencies and stakeholders to prevent the sale of unsafe meat across the state.
The Commissioner also announced plans to hold a community engagement with abattoir operators, butchers, livestock dealers, meat vendors, and regulatory authorities to strengthen food safety measures and prevent similar incidents.
The police urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving the slaughter, processing, transportation, or sale of meat to the nearest police station or relevant authorities.
