Finnish President Says China Promises to Stop Russia From Using Nuclear Weapons.

China has privately assured Finland that it would not allow Russia to use nuclear weapons in its war against Ukraine, Finnish President Alexander Stubb has said.

Speaking in an interview with Politico, Stubb said he had raised the issue with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during their meeting in Helsinki in July. According to the Finnish president, Wang responded that China would “never allow this to happen.”

Stubb described the assurance as an important deterrent against nuclear escalation and said China could play a role in preventing the conflict from escalating further.

The Finnish president also dismissed concerns that Russia was preparing for an imminent attack on NATO, saying Moscow was more likely to test the alliance through provocations than launch a direct war against it.

“Stay calm, keep your cool, remain composed, stay vigilant,” Stubb said, urging Europeans not to dramatize Russia’s nuclear threats while remaining prepared for potential risks.

Stubb further argued that Russia benefits when European countries focus heavily on the possibility of nuclear escalation or an attack on NATO.

He said Europe could eventually need to resume direct political communication with Moscow to prevent misunderstandings, although he stressed that the time for such dialogue had not yet arrived.

According to Stubb, supporting Ukraine remains Europe’s immediate priority.

Meanwhile, NATO is reportedly considering measures to strengthen nuclear deterrence in Europe amid continued threats from Russia, including the possible deployment of additional U.S. nuclear weapons.
