Kosovo’s acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, was targeted with eggs inside parliament on Saturday after he requested more time to negotiate political arrangements before nominating a candidate for parliamentary speaker.
The incident occurred amid continued political uncertainty following Kosovo’s snap election in June, which left political parties divided and delayed the formation of a new government.
Under Kosovo’s parliamentary process, lawmakers must first elect a speaker before the process of forming a new government can move forward.
Kurti had been holding discussions with opposition parties over broader political arrangements, including the selection of a new president. He therefore sought to delay the vote for parliamentary speaker to allow further negotiations.
During the parliamentary session, Alliance Party lawmaker Time Kadrijaj shouted, “Shame on you!” before throwing eggs at Kurti.
Kurti remained calm following the incident and defended his decision to continue negotiations, saying he was prepared to face criticism if dialogue could help resolve the country’s political deadlock.
The confrontation highlights the growing tensions in Kosovo’s parliament as political parties struggle to reach an agreement on the formation of a new government.
