Bangladesh says it has not yet made a final decision on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s reported visit to India, after Indian media reported that he could travel to New Delhi from August 23 to 25.
The proposed visit would be Rahman’s first trip to India since he became prime minister in February following his Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) landslide election victory.
Bangladesh and India have been holding discussions for weeks over the visit as both countries seek to repair relations that deteriorated following the 2024 removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Rahman’s Press Secretary, A.A.M. Saleh, told Reuters that no decision had yet been made regarding the visit. He said Dhaka was waiting for India’s response to its request for the extradition of Hasina and other fugitives wanted by Bangladesh.
Hasina fled to India after student-led protests ended her long rule. She has remained in exile there, while Bangladesh has repeatedly asked New Delhi to extradite her. India has said it is examining the request.
India’s Foreign Ministry said it had no comment on the reported visit.
Rahman’s six-month-old government has sought to maintain good relations with India, but Dhaka recently indicated that a more favourable diplomatic environment was needed before the prime minister could travel to New Delhi.
Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia in November over allegations that she ordered a deadly crackdown on the student-led uprising. She has rejected the charges as politically motivated and has said she plans to return to Bangladesh in December.
