The Aliko Dangote Foundation has pledged ₦600 million towards the construction of a female students’ hostel at Lagos State University (LASU).
The foundation also announced that first-class graduates in Engineering and Sciences from the university’s latest graduating classes will receive preferential consideration for employment opportunities within the Dangote Group after completing their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
The announcements were made during LASU’s combined 29th and 30th Convocation Ceremonies. Hajia Fatima Aliko Dangote represented her father, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, who was honoured with an Honorary Doctor of Business (Honoris Causa) for his contributions to entrepreneurship, industrial development and human capital development.
The Dangote Group currently employs more than 52,000 people across Nigeria and 11 other African countries.
Sanwo-Olu Rewards Best Graduating Students
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu donated ₦20 million each to the best graduating students of the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.
A total of 20,604 students graduated across the two academic sessions, including 494 first-class graduates.
Among the outstanding graduates were Lawal Ayilara of the Department of Project Management, who recorded a 4.96 CGPA, and Samuel Oluolamide Adebanjo of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, who graduated with a 4.97 CGPA.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted his administration’s investments in LASU, including the construction of a library complex, lecture theatres, student accommodation and other infrastructure projects. The university’s accommodation capacity has increased to about 8,000 beds.
LASU Records Growth
Outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, said the university had recorded significant progress during her five-year tenure. She disclosed that LASU’s internally generated revenue increased from ₦3 billion in September 2021 to ₦13 billion by September 2025.
The university was also selected as the sole South-West beneficiary of a ₦3 billion TETFund grant for the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Cyber Sciences.
LASU’s Pro-Chancellor, Babatunde Ogala, also announced a strategic partnership with the University of Illinois Chicago covering student exchanges, lecturer collaboration and joint research.
The convocation also featured the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on Akin Kekere-Ekun and Harriet-Ann Omobolanle Adesola.
The Epe Campus hosted a convocation ceremony for the first time in LASU’s history, with graduates from Engineering and Agricultural Sciences among those honoured.
