The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has uncovered 399 fully assembled Jojef firearms and various rifle components concealed in a shipment at the Tin Can Island Port Command in Lagos.
The seizure was confirmed after Customs officials completed a detailed examination and coupling of firearm components that had initially been discovered packed as knocked-down parts inside a container.
According to the NCS National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, the shipment contained 399 fully assembled rifles, alongside several additional firearm components.
The recovered parts included 89 frames, 16 heat shields, 10 trigger pins, three pistons, 25 locking lugs and 80 charging handles. Other items recovered were 39 pistol-grip screws, 34 springs, 57 trigger groups, 66 foregrip latches, 45 foregrips or handguards, four pistol grips and five barrels.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, said the interception highlighted the growing threat posed by criminal networks attempting to exploit Nigeria’s ports, borders and airports to smuggle prohibited items into the country.
He warned that such attempts could increase as Nigeria approaches another major election cycle.
Adeniyi said the Customs Service would intensify surveillance, intelligence gathering and enforcement operations at the country’s entry points to prevent the movement of illegal arms and other prohibited goods.
He also stressed the importance of cooperation with other security agencies, particularly the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), under the Office of the National Security Adviser.
The seized firearms will be handed over to the NCCSALW after the completion of an inventory and assessment.
The Customs chief said the operation demonstrated the commitment of security agencies to removing dangerous weapons from circulation and ensuring that individuals and networks involved in arms trafficking are identified and prosecuted.
