The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has directed all lawyers, court registrars, litigation staff, and other legal officers to stop using the title "Barrister" before their names in all official dealings with the Supreme Court.
The directive, which took immediate effect, was contained in a circular dated July 13, 2026, and signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi.
According to the circular, the Chief Justice described the use of the title "Barrister" as inappropriate and inconsistent with the level of professionalism expected within Nigeria's highest court.
Under the new policy, legal practitioners are no longer permitted to use the title in official correspondence, court records, legal documents, identity cards, or any other materials related to official business with the Supreme Court.
The circular also instructed heads of departments and unit heads to ensure full compliance with the directive across all relevant offices.
While every lawyer called to the Nigerian Bar is qualified as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, the Supreme Court clarified that "Barrister" is part of a lawyer's professional qualification and should not be used as an official title in documents submitted to the apex court.
