China’s homegrown COMAC C919 passenger jet has completed its first scheduled international commercial flight, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to challenge the dominance of Boeing and Airbus in the global aviation market.
The Air China-operated C919 departed from Beijing Capital International Airport on Wednesday afternoon and headed to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The new Beijing–Ulaanbaatar route will operate daily.
The flight represents the first time the C919 has operated a scheduled commercial service outside Chinese territory since entering service.
The milestone highlights China’s ambition to build a competitive domestic aircraft industry and reduce its dependence on Western aircraft manufacturers.
However, COMAC still faces significant challenges before the C919 can seriously compete with Boeing and Airbus globally. The aircraft continues to rely on a number of foreign-made components and faces the additional hurdle of obtaining certification from aviation authorities in major Western markets.
Despite these obstacles, the C919’s first international service is being viewed as an important step in China’s attempt to break the Boeing-Airbus duopoly in the commercial aviation industry.
