China Workers Fear AI Could Replace Their Jobs

Workers across China are increasingly worried that artificial intelligence could take over their jobs as businesses rapidly adopt AI and robotics.

One example is Fei Zhaojun, a 40-year-old computer programmer in Beijing. His boss asked him whether AI might soon replace human programmers. Just two weeks later, Fei was laid off along with around 160 colleagues.

AI is now being used widely in China, including in programming, scriptwriting, manufacturing and other physical tasks. Government policies are also encouraging businesses and individuals to adopt AI technologies.

Some economists warn that widespread job losses could eventually affect China's economy. However, many Chinese workers are choosing to adapt rather than resist the technology.

Fei said that many mid-level programming jobs are already replaceable in many situations. After losing his job, he began making short videos about ordinary people's lives while considering his next career move.

Experts say workers who fear being replaced by AI are increasingly experimenting with AI-powered businesses and independent work.

The situation highlights a growing global concern: AI may create new opportunities, but it could also significantly change or eliminate many traditional jobs.
