Canada has condemned Israel’s military presence in southern Lebanon, with Secretary of State for International Development Randeep Sarai describing it as an “unlawful invasion” and calling for Lebanon’s sovereignty to be respected.
Sarai made the remarks during a visit to Lebanon, where he announced new humanitarian assistance for communities affected by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
The United Nations estimates that about 360,000 people remain displaced following the latest fighting, which began after Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel on March 2, two days after the United States and Israel began attacks on Iran.
The conflict has reportedly killed more than 4,000 people, caused extensive destruction across southern Lebanon and displaced more than one million people at its peak.
Israel has launched a ground operation and currently controls dozens of towns and villages in southern Lebanon, many of which have suffered severe destruction. Israeli officials say their forces will remain until Hezbollah is disarmed.
Canada has previously criticized Israel’s military operations in both Gaza and Lebanon while also condemning Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel. Hezbollah is designated a terrorist organization by Canada.
During his visit, Sarai announced three new programmes aimed at supporting vulnerable families and women in Lebanon. The latest commitments bring Canada’s total assistance to Lebanon this year to more than C$71 million (about US$50.23 million).
Canada said its support is intended to help communities affected by the conflict and provide humanitarian assistance to those in need.
