Cambridge’s Youngest Black Professor Found Dead After Plagiarism Controversy

Jason Arday, a British sociologist who became the youngest Black professor at the University of Cambridge, has been found dead at the age of 41.

Arday, who was appointed to Cambridge at 37 in 2023, resigned from the university last week following weeks of intense media scrutiny and allegations of plagiarism in his academic work. Questions were also raised about some of his claims regarding his athletic and fundraising achievements.

According to British media reports, Arday was found unresponsive inside a home in Battersea, south London, on Friday afternoon.

His death came in the same week that his memoir, Great and Unfortunate Things, was released. His family said they were devastated by the loss of a father, partner, brother, uncle and son.

The family also accused unnamed individuals of subjecting Arday to years of sustained abuse and a campaign of misinformation.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a 41-year-old man was pronounced dead in Battersea. Police said the death was being treated as unexpected but was not believed to be suspicious.

Arday’s death follows a period of intense public attention surrounding his academic career and the allegations against him.
