The Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sainna Buba, has sparked controversy after making remarks perceived as threats against individuals who oppose the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Buba made the comments at the inauguration of a political campaign organised by the Tinubu City Boy Movement, a support group backing President Bola Tinubu and his expected bid for re-election in 2027.
While addressing supporters at the event, the commissioner warned political opponents against challenging the ruling party, using language that appeared to threaten physical retaliation.
“Whoever shows us a finger, we are ready to cut off his fingers,” Buba said.
He added that anyone who continued to challenge the group would face consequences, saying, “Whoever dares to show us a finger again, we will break his finger.”
The commissioner also appeared to link access to government benefits with political support, saying those who supported the government would enjoy its benefits while those who refused could face punishment.
His remarks have attracted criticism, with observers expressing concern that inflammatory statements by public officials could undermine political tolerance, democratic participation and the right of citizens to support opposition parties.
The controversy comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Buba has yet to publicly clarify his remarks or explain whether they were intended literally or as political rhetoric.
The Borno State Government had also not issued an official response to the commissioner’s comments at the time of reporting.
The incident follows a separate controversy involving the Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Danjuma Shekwolo, who reportedly told residents to support the APC in 2027 or leave the council area.
The developments have renewed concerns over the tone of political campaigns and the need for public officials and political actors to promote peaceful participation and respect for opposing views ahead of the 2027 elections.
