The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Oyewole Mayowa Solomon, has died after collapsing during a party reconciliation meeting in Iyara, the headquarters of the local government.
Solomon reportedly collapsed on Friday while attending the meeting, which was organised to resolve internal disputes within the party and promote unity among its members ahead of future political activities.
He was said to have received medical attention at the venue before being rushed to a hospital in Kabba, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The meeting was convened by a former Ijumu Local Government chairman, Funsho Olumoko, following disagreements among members of the APC. A previous meeting had reportedly ended in a deadlock over an alleged leadership crisis in the local government chapter.
The latest meeting brought together political leaders, local government and ward executives, women and youth leaders, as well as government appointees representing the 15 wards in Ijumu.
Reacting to the death, Senator Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West Senatorial District, and Hon. Salman Idris, representing Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, expressed sadness over the incident.
They described Solomon as a loyal APC member, committed grassroots mobiliser and bridge-builder whose contributions to the party in Ijumu and Kogi West would be greatly missed.
Karimi said the deceased's death was a painful loss to his family, Ijumu Local Government and the APC in Kogi State.
As of the time of the report, the Kogi State Police Command had yet to respond to inquiries concerning the incident.
