Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has welcomed the United States’ decision to remove Syria from its decades-old State Sponsors of Terrorism list, describing the move as the end of a painful chapter and a new opportunity for reconstruction and economic development.
Speaking after Washington’s decision, al-Sharaa thanked US President Donald Trump and countries that supported Syria, saying the country could now pursue development, reconstruction and rebuilding.
The US designation, imposed in 1979, had subjected Syria to severe economic restrictions. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said lifting the designation would encourage investment and support Syria’s political and economic stability, while stressing that Washington would continue to target terrorism and hold individuals responsible for wrongdoing accountable.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the decision removes major barriers to private-sector investment and could help Syria reintegrate into the global economy.
The move comes as Syria continues efforts to rebuild following years of war and the ouster of former President Bashar al-Assad in 2024. The World Bank estimates that rebuilding the country could cost more than $216bn.
Several regional countries, including Türkiye, Qatar, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, welcomed the US decision, saying it could contribute to Syria’s recovery, stability and reintegration into the international community.
Syria is also expanding its diplomatic and international links. Its government has launched an English-language social media account for its foreign media department, while Syrian Airlines plans to introduce direct flights from Damascus to Copenhagen and Vienna from September 21.
The developments signal a significant shift in Syria’s international position as its new leadership seeks investment, diplomatic engagement and closer economic ties with the rest of the world.
