80-Year-Old Woman Dies in British Columbia Wildfire as Evacuations Expand

An 80-year-old woman has died in a fast-moving wildfire in British Columbia, Canada, becoming the first reported fatality linked to the blaze, police said.

The woman, a resident of Meadow Valley, reportedly died suddenly while evacuating her home with a family member as the Bald Range wildfire continued to spread across the region.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they believe her death was related to the wildfire, although investigations are ongoing.

The blaze, which was discovered on Friday, has now burned more than 13,600 hectares (33,600 acres) and triggered British Columbia's largest evacuation operation of the summer.

More than 20,000 people across the province have been forced to leave their homes as firefighters battle the rapidly spreading flames amid hot, dry and windy conditions.

Nearby Summerland, a community of about 12,000 people, was among the areas affected by the evacuations. Authorities said many elderly residents were given advance warnings to leave their homes.

Canada has experienced an intense wildfire season this year, with more than 4,600 fires burning approximately 4 million hectares of land across the country.

The BC Wildfire Service warned that lightning could spark additional fires in the Okanagan region, where rainfall has remained limited. Officials also expect high temperatures and strong winds to continue in parts of British Columbia, potentially worsening fire conditions.

Authorities continue to urge residents in affected communities to follow evacuation orders and remain alert to emergency warnings.
