5.4-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Near Egypt’s Suez, No Casualties Reported

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Suez, Egypt, early Monday, prompting authorities to activate emergency response measures in affected areas.

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). Egyptian authorities later revised the epicenter to about 38 kilometers from Suez, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) had earlier placed it approximately 29 kilometers northwest of the city.

The Egyptian Red Crescent activated its emergency response plan in governorates where the tremor was felt. However, officials said no casualties or property damage had been reported as of the latest update.

Residents have been advised to avoid buildings showing signs of structural damage and to rely only on official information while authorities continue to assess the situation.

Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean lie within an active seismic zone where earthquakes occur periodically, though most are minor and cause little or no damage. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
