Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked U.S. President Donald Trump to urgently provide 300 Patriot interceptor missiles before winter to help defend Ukraine's energy infrastructure against intensified Russian attacks.
Speaking in an interview with Axios, Zelenskyy warned that without additional air defense missiles, Russia could severely damage Ukraine's power facilities, leaving millions of people without electricity and heating during the cold season.
According to Zelenskyy, Trump agreed to explore the request and support a "winter package" of Patriot interceptors. He also expressed willingness to help Ukraine obtain licenses to produce Patriot missiles domestically, although he noted that global demand for the interceptors remains high due to ongoing conflicts.
The Ukrainian leader said Russia launches between 30 and 40 ballistic missiles during each large-scale strike, with such attacks occurring several times each month.
Zelenskyy acknowledged that even if Ukraine receives production licenses, manufacturing Patriot interceptors in large quantities could take years. To speed up the process, he said Ukraine is prepared to share military technology and expertise with the United States in exchange for additional air defense missiles.
He also revealed that Ukraine is studying the possibility of modifying its own ballistic missile technology into interceptor missiles similar to the Patriot system, describing the option as potentially faster and more cost-effective.
The request followed Zelenskyy's meeting with Trump at the White House, where both leaders discussed strengthening Ukraine's air defense capabilities and expanding defense cooperation.
