The Venezuelan government has officially informed the United Nations of its decision to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing the global tribunal of political bias and unfairly targeting countries in Africa and Latin America.
Foreign Minister Felix Plasencia announced on Friday that the withdrawal is "irrevocable," arguing that the ICC has demonstrated a geographical bias against nations in the Global South. He said Venezuela no longer has confidence in the court's impartiality.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez echoed the government's position, stating that the ICC has become a politicized institution used to undermine Venezuela and its people.
The move follows a decision by Venezuela's National Assembly in December 2025 to repeal the law that ratified the Rome Statute, the treaty establishing the ICC, paving the way for the country's withdrawal.
The ICC has been investigating alleged crimes against humanity in Venezuela since 2021. The court has accused members of the country's security forces and government officials of committing serious human rights violations dating back to at least 2017. Venezuelan authorities have consistently rejected the allegations.
Earlier this year, the ICC closed its office in Caracas, citing a lack of cooperation from the Venezuelan government.
Venezuela's announcement came on the same day that ICC member states voted to remove Prosecutor Karim Khan following allegations of sexual misconduct, which he has denied.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said Venezuela is "not yet ready" to hold elections but praised Acting President Delcy Rodríguez for what he described as progress in leading the country's transition.
The withdrawal marks a significant shift in Venezuela's relationship with international justice institutions and is expected to further fuel debate over the ICC's role and credibility on the global stage.
