The United States has launched a fresh wave of military strikes against Iran, marking the ninth consecutive night of attacks, following the death of a US service member in northern Iraq.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the soldier was killed during the controlled disposal of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone. The incident has further escalated tensions between Washington and Tehran.
CENTCOM said the latest operation targeted Iranian military command centres, air defence systems, coastal surveillance facilities, missile and drone launch sites, maritime assets, and communication networks. The US military said the strikes were intended to reduce Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping and civilian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for missile attacks on US military aircraft and facilities in Jordan, alleging that several aircraft were damaged and military infrastructure was destroyed. These claims have not been independently verified.
The US Embassy in Bahrain also issued a security alert, warning American citizens to remain vigilant amid intelligence suggesting possible threats to locations in central Manama.
In the Strait of Hormuz, maritime authorities reported that a vessel caught fire near the coast of Oman. The cause of the incident remains under investigation, with ships in the area advised to exercise caution.
US President Donald Trump said the renewed strikes were carried out in honour of American service members killed during the conflict, stressing that the US would continue efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran would only consider ending the conflict when it had secured a strategic advantage on the battlefield, adding that negotiations should take place only from a position of strength.
The latest developments highlight the continued escalation of hostilities between the United States and Iran, raising concerns over regional security and the safety of international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
