UN Demands Immediate Release of Detained Gaza Doctor

A United Nations human rights body has called on Israel to immediately release detained Gaza doctor Hussam Abu Safiya, describing his detention as arbitrary and in violation of international human rights standards.

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention said Israel's actions breached provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. It also urged that Dr. Abu Safiya be compensated.

Human rights organizations and his lawyer warned that his life is in imminent danger, alleging he has been subjected to daily abuse while in detention. However, the Israel Prison Service denied claims of mistreatment. Israeli authorities have not immediately responded to the UN group's latest findings.
