Ukraine's newly appointed commander-in-chief, General Mykhailo Drapatyi, has pledged to intensify military operations against Russia, including expanding attacks behind enemy lines, following his appointment by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In a statement, Drapatyi said Ukraine's armed forces would "continue and intensify offensive operations in all domains" while acting responsibly and supporting troops defending the country.
His appointment comes as Ukraine claims to have regained about 700 square kilometres of territory this year and continues to increase drone and missile strikes on Russian military and logistics targets.
On Wednesday, Ukrainian drones reportedly struck warehouses in southern Russia for the second time this week. President Zelenskyy also said Ukrainian forces targeted an oil depot, a tanker, and four cargo ships linked to Russia's so-called "shadow fleet" in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
Meanwhile, Russia's Ministry of Defence said its forces attacked cargo ships, military warehouses, fuel storage facilities, and drone depots in Ukraine. Moscow also claimed to have captured two settlements in the Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions, though these claims could not be independently verified.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the significance of Drapatyi's appointment, saying it would not change the situation on the battlefield.
Diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled. However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected to meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Manila during the ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting to discuss the conflict. Rubio said the United States remains willing to support renewed peace negotiations if an opportunity arises.
Ukraine has also renewed its request for additional Patriot air defence systems, as Russia continues to launch large-scale missile attacks across the country.
