The United Kingdom has updated its customs guidelines, outlining what travellers are allowed to bring into the country without paying tax or customs duty, while reaffirming strict restrictions on certain goods.
According to the updated guidance, personal allowances apply only to items intended for personal use or as gifts. Goods meant for commercial purposes must be declared regardless of their value.
Travellers entering England, Scotland and Wales from outside the UK may bring up to 42 litres of beer, 18 litres of still wine, and either 4 litres of spirits above 22% alcohol or 9 litres of lower-strength alcoholic drinks. The alcohol allowance can also be split between different beverage types.
For tobacco, visitors are permitted to carry up to 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars, 250 grams of tobacco, or 200 heated tobacco sticks, or a combination within the allowed limit.
Passengers can also bring personal goods valued at up to £390 when arriving by most forms of transport, or £270 if travelling by private aircraft or boat.
The government stressed that travellers under the age of 17 are not entitled to duty-free allowances for alcohol or tobacco, and any such items must be declared.
Items prohibited from entering the UK include controlled drugs, offensive weapons, pepper spray, endangered animal and plant species, rough diamonds, obscene materials, and most meat and dairy products from non-EU countries.
Certain goods—including firearms, explosives, ammunition, protected wildlife products, some food items, plants, medicines and products covered by international conservation rules—require the appropriate permits before they can be brought into the country.
The authorities also warned that counterfeit or pirated goods may be confiscated, and travellers found importing such items could face legal action.
Travellers must declare any goods that exceed their personal allowance, fall under restricted categories, or are intended for business use. Failure to declare such items could result in confiscation, fines or prosecution.
The UK government added that if a traveller exceeds the allowance for any category, customs duty and taxes may apply to all items in that category, not just the amount above the limit. Travellers can submit customs declarations online before arrival or complete the process at the border.
