Tinubu Confirms Attendance at 81st UN General Assembly in September

President Bola Tinubu will attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this September, Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has announced.

Speaking after meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Ibrahim said Tinubu is scheduled to deliver Nigeria's address to world leaders, where he will highlight the country's economic reforms and development achievements.

According to him, the President's speech is expected to be delivered at about 10:45 a.m. New York time (3:45 p.m. Nigerian time), allowing Nigerians to watch the address live.

Ibrahim also disclosed that President Tinubu will participate in several high-level side events focusing on power and energy, education, healthcare, and regional security.

On reports of a possible meeting with United States President Donald Trump, Ibrahim said he could not confirm an official bilateral meeting but revealed that Tinubu would be seated in the front row of the General Assembly Hall, just a few seats away from the American president. A source familiar with the seating arrangement suggested the proximity could provide an opportunity for the two leaders to meet informally.

The envoy further said Tinubu intends to use Nigeria's participation at the UN to advocate stronger international cooperation on border security in West Africa, describing the region's porous borders as a major security concern.

Tinubu's participation will mark his return to the UN General Assembly after delegating Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent Nigeria at the 2024 and 2025 sessions while he remained focused on domestic priorities.
