At least 16 people have reportedly been killed after suspected armed herders attacked Nobi community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State in the early hours of Sunday.
According to local residents, the gunmen invaded the community between 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., firing indiscriminately and forcing villagers to flee. Several others were injured, while some residents remain unaccounted for.
The attack sparked protests by youths and women in Otukpo, who blocked major roads, including the Otukpo–Enugu and Otukpo–Makurdi highways, demanding urgent government intervention to end the persistent violence.
One resident, Comfort Inalegwu, said she lost her sister and two children during the attack, alleging that the victims were shot inside their home. She added that the bodies had been deposited at the Otukpo General Hospital morgue.
The protesters warned they would continue their demonstrations and could disrupt future elections in the area if authorities failed to stop the recurring attacks in Idoma communities.
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the killings, describing the incident as a barbaric assault on innocent lives and a threat to peace in the state.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor directed security agencies to intensify surveillance, strengthen collaboration with neighbouring states, and ensure those responsible for the attack are arrested and prosecuted.
Alia also urged residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence to help prevent further attacks.
As of the time of reporting, the Benue State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident, while the chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area could not be reached for comment.
