At least nine members of the same family, including a two-month-old baby, have reportedly been killed in a fresh attack by suspected gunmen on Kum and Wereng-Camp communities in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Residents said the attackers invaded the communities around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, shooting indiscriminately and attacking homes for more than an hour. The village head was also critically injured during the assault.

A resident, Precious Tok, said the gunmen stormed the villages in large numbers, forcing many people to flee into nearby bushes for safety.

According to him, nine members of one family were killed in a single house, while the infant was among those who lost their lives.

Another resident described the attack as horrific, lamenting the continued wave of violence in the area and calling on the government to strengthen security to prevent further bloodshed.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident, saying the attackers struck under the cover of darkness while residents were asleep. He added that the village head is receiving treatment after sustaining life-threatening injuries.

Security personnel have since been deployed to the affected communities, while many residents remain displaced and fearful of further attacks.

As of the time of reporting, the Plateau State Police Command had not officially commented on the incident, as efforts to reach the police spokesperson were unsuccessful.
