Spain and France are battling major wildfires as authorities warn that soaring temperatures and dry conditions could trigger more blazes across Europe in the coming days.
In Spain, firefighters continue to combat a massive wildfire in the Guadalajara region, which has already scorched more than 32,000 hectares, making it one of the country's largest recorded wildfires. The blaze comes just weeks after another deadly fire in southern Spain claimed 13 lives.
During a visit to the affected area, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for greater action to address climate change, saying rising temperatures are increasing the frequency and severity of wildfires.
Spain's national weather agency has issued very high to extreme wildfire risk warnings across most of the country, with temperatures expected to reach 42–44°C in parts of the Mediterranean region.
In neighboring France, firefighters are working to contain a wildfire in the southeastern Var region, where about 2,500 hectares have burned. The fire has damaged dozens of homes and forced around 400 residents to evacuate.
French authorities have banned barbecues and urged local communities to cancel planned fireworks displays to reduce the risk of new fires. Additional wildfires are also burning in the Hautes-Alpes region.
Elsewhere in Europe, Italy, Greece, and Cyprus have issued heat and wildfire alerts. Sicily remains on the highest wildfire alert level, while Greece and Cyprus have temporarily banned outdoor work during the hottest hours of the day to protect workers from extreme heat.
Scientists say climate change is contributing to more frequent and intense heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires across Europe, making such disasters increasingly common during the summer months.
