The Nigerian Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation to the families of five people who lost their lives during the rescue operation that freed abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The donation, announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Wednesday's plenary, will see each of the five affected families receive ₦10 million as support for those left behind.
Akpabio described the deceased as heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight against insecurity, noting that the financial assistance is intended to help care for their families, especially their children.
The approval followed the Senate's adoption of a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who praised President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for successfully rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers after 56 days in captivity.
According to the Senate, the rescue operation, launched on the President's directive, led to the safe release of the victims, the elimination of several suspected criminals and the arrest of eight terror suspects.
Lawmakers also called for comprehensive medical treatment and welfare support for Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain, who sustained serious injuries while protecting the abducted children during the operation.
The Senate paid tribute to the three soldiers—Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa and Sergeant Abena John Jerome—as well as two teachers who lost their lives during the rescue mission.
The victims were among those affected by the May 15 abduction of more than 45 pupils and teachers from two schools in Oriire Local Government Area, an incident that sparked nationwide concern over school security.
The Senate reaffirmed its commitment to supporting stronger security measures, improving the protection of schools and vulnerable communities, and enhancing the welfare of security personnel serving in dangerous operations.
