Eight members of Iraq's Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) were killed and four others wounded after Saudi Arabia and the United States carried out coordinated airstrikes on the group's positions across Iraq, according to the PMF.
Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Defence said the operation was conducted in coordination with the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) in response to recent drone attacks allegedly launched by Iran-backed armed groups from Iraqi territory.
Riyadh said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed several drones targeting oil facilities in the Eastern Province and the capital, Riyadh. The kingdom added that while it does not seek further escalation, it will respond to any threats against its security.
The PMF condemned the strikes, describing them as a dangerous escalation and a violation of Iraq's sovereignty.
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is expected to visit Saudi Arabia on Thursday, days after ordering an investigation into the recent drone attacks targeting the kingdom.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella coalition of Iran-backed armed groups, denied responsibility for the drone attacks, calling the Saudi accusations false and warning that any military action against it would be met with a strong response.
