Russia to Fine Websites Allowing Apple, Google Login IDs

Russia to Fine Websites Allowing Apple, Google Login IDs

Russia has begun enforcing a new law that fines websites and mobile applications that allow users to sign in using foreign authentication services such as Apple ID and Google ID.

The measure follows legislation signed by President Vladimir Putin on June 26, introducing penalties for online platforms that fail to comply with Russia's updated user identification rules.

Under the new regulations, internet users in Russia must log in through approved domestic systems, including a Russian mobile phone number, the Gosuslugi government services portal, the Unified Biometric System, or other Russian-owned authentication platforms.

Russian lawmakers said the fines apply to website and app operators rather than individual users. Several digital services have already informed customers that Apple ID and Google ID sign-in options will be discontinued.

The move is part of Russia's broader effort to strengthen its domestic digital infrastructure, reduce reliance on foreign technology, and ensure that user data is stored within the country.
