Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on President Bola Tinubu to either resign or abandon plans to seek re-election in 2027, accusing his administration of failing to tackle Nigeria's worsening insecurity and showing insufficient concern for victims of violence.
In a statement released on Monday, Obi said the Federal Government's handling of the prolonged abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo State reflected what he described as a collapse of governance. He argued that more than 50 days after the kidnapping, there had been no meaningful progress in securing the children's release.
Obi said he recently visited Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde alongside political economist Pat Utomi to express solidarity with the state government and the families of the abducted children. He revealed that he was surprised to learn the President had allegedly not contacted Governor Makinde since the incident occurred.
Drawing comparisons with the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls' abduction, Obi recalled that the delayed response of then-President Goodluck Jonathan attracted widespread criticism, including from Tinubu, who at the time called for Jonathan's resignation.
According to Obi, Nigeria has witnessed more than a dozen school kidnappings under the current administration, yet he believes the level of presidential engagement has been inadequate. He described the continued captivity of schoolchildren and other victims as evidence of failing leadership.
The former Anambra State governor accused the Tinubu administration of lacking both the capacity and compassion needed to address the country's security crisis. He maintained that, in the interest of the nation, the President should either resign or refrain from seeking another term in office.
Obi insisted that his remarks were motivated by concern for Nigeria's future rather than political rivalry, saying the country's security situation requires urgent and decisive leadership.
