Russia carried out its largest ballistic missile attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, since the start of the war, Ukrainian officials said on Sunday. The overnight assault killed at least one person and injured 15 others, while causing widespread damage across several districts of the city.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, described the barrage as a "brutal terrorist attack" and called for stronger international pressure on Moscow to halt the continued attacks.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the strikes sparked fires in residential buildings, offices, industrial facilities, a student dormitory, and several vehicles. Emergency crews rescued multiple residents trapped in burning buildings, while firefighters battled blazes in at least six districts of Kyiv.
Ukraine's Air Force reported that Russia launched 41 missiles overnight, of which 18 were intercepted. Officials said the country remains vulnerable to ballistic missile attacks due to a shortage of Patriot air defence interceptor missiles.
Elsewhere, Russian drone strikes reportedly killed one civilian in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region. In the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, a drone strike hit a passenger train, killing the train conductor and setting several rail cars on fire.
Meanwhile, Ukraine said its military struck two Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea as part of efforts to disrupt Russian supply routes to occupied Crimea.
The latest attacks come as Ukraine faces both mounting military pressure and domestic political tensions following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's recent cabinet reshuffle, including the dismissal of the country's defence minister.
U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that the United States is prepared to grant Ukraine licences to produce Patriot interceptor missiles domestically, although further details and a timeline have not yet been announced.
