The Sokoto State Police Command has rescued 32 kidnapped victims and disrupted a major bandit operation in Rabah Local Government Area following a coordinated security operation involving police tactical teams and the Nigerian Army.
The operation was carried out on Tuesday in Maikujera village, a remote community bordering Zamfara State, after the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Rabah received a distress call that armed bandits had invaded the area.
According to the Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, the attackers were moving with stolen livestock and dozens of abducted victims while firing shots at residents.
The DPO immediately mobilised tactical units, including the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and the Violent Crime Reaction Unit (VCRU), while also coordinating with the Nigerian Army’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) to block possible escape routes.
The combined security forces engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle, forcing the criminals to abandon their captives and stolen livestock before escaping into the forest.
After the confrontation, security operatives searched the surrounding areas and successfully rescued all 32 kidnapped victims.
The rescued victims included six adult males and 26 females, most of whom were children. They were evacuated to a safe location, where they are currently receiving medical and psychological support before being reunited with their families.
However, the police confirmed that four people were killed by the bandits during the initial attack before security forces arrived.
The Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, Hayatu Shaffa, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured residents that efforts were ongoing to track down the fleeing attackers and bring them to justice.
He reaffirmed the police command’s commitment to fighting banditry and kidnapping across the state, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies.
