Four police officers attached to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have been arrested for allegedly extorting ₦53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), at an illegal checkpoint in Abuja.
According to the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, the officers stopped the ICPC chairman around the Banex area in Wuse, forced him to withdraw ₦53,000 from a nearby Point of Sale (POS) operator, and shared the money among themselves. The officers reportedly did not know the identity of their victim.
Sanusi disclosed that the suspects had abandoned their official duty posts to operate an unauthorized stop-and-search checkpoint where they allegedly extorted motorists.
Following complaints, the police command declared the officers wanted before arresting the alleged gang leader, whose confession led investigators to the remaining three suspects.
The commissioner described the officers as "criminals" who have no place in the Nigeria Police Force and vowed that they would face severe disciplinary action, including possible dismissal.
He also reminded the public that police officers have no legal authority to stop people on the road and search their mobile phones during routine patrols. Sanusi urged anyone confronted with such demands to refuse and immediately report the incident through the police emergency lines.
The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to identifying, investigating, and punishing officers involved in extortion, illegal checkpoints, and other forms of misconduct, stressing that corrupt practices will not be tolerated within the force.
