The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested four suspects for allegedly threatening to kidnap a resident of Jega Local Government Area unless he paid a ransom of N30 million.
The command's spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, said in a statement on Monday that the suspects allegedly obtained the victim's phone number through one of his relatives before launching the extortion attempt.
According to the police, the suspects used a newly registered telephone line and disguised their voices to sound like kidnappers. They repeatedly called the victim, demanding N30 million and threatening to abduct him if he failed to pay.
Following credible intelligence, police operatives tracked and arrested three of the suspects, identified as Muhammad Shafiu, Mansur Ibrahim and Muhammed Sulaiman. Further investigation later led to the arrest of a fourth suspect.
The police said all four suspects are currently in custody and will be charged in court after investigations are concluded.
Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Hadejia, urged residents to continue supporting security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious movements, threats and other criminal activities to help prevent crime across the state.
