Plateau Government Procures 500 Truckloads of Fertiliser, Slashes Price to ₦20,000 for Farmers

The Plateau State Government has purchased about 500 truckloads of fertiliser for the 2026 farming season and reduced the price of a 50kg bag to ₦20,000 through a subsidy programme aimed at supporting farmers across the state's 17 local government areas.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang announced the initiative in Jos, describing it as part of his administration's efforts to strengthen agriculture, improve food security and stimulate economic growth.

According to the governor, the fertiliser subsidy is intended to ease the burden of rising farming costs and ensure that farmers have access to affordable and quality agricultural inputs during the planting season.

Under the programme, a 50kg bag of fertiliser, which currently sells for between ₦50,000 and ₦53,000 in the open market, will now be available to farmers at the subsidised rate of ₦20,000.

The governor directed that sales of the fertiliser begin immediately, while the official launch of the 2026 Fertiliser Subsidy Programme is scheduled for Friday, July 10.

Mutfwang said agriculture remains a major pillar of his administration's development agenda, noting that the intervention will help reduce production costs, improve crop yields, increase farmers' incomes and enhance food security across the state.

He added that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government's agricultural development policies under President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda and complements ongoing efforts to address economic challenges through increased food production.

The governor urged farmers across Plateau State to take full advantage of the subsidy programme, assuring them of continued government support for policies that promote agricultural productivity and improve rural livelihoods.

Plateau State is one of Nigeria's leading agricultural hubs, producing crops such as Irish potatoes, maize, tomatoes, vegetables and fruits. However, rising fertiliser prices and other farming costs have continued to pose challenges for farmers, making subsidy programmes an important tool for boosting food production and strengthening food security.
