OpenAI to Publicly Launch New GPT-5.6 AI Models Following US Security Review

OpenAI has announced that it will officially release its latest generation of artificial intelligence models, the GPT-5.6 series, to the public on Thursday after the United States government completed a security review and approved a broader rollout.

The new model family includes three versions: GPT-5.6 Sol, the flagship model designed for advanced tasks; GPT-5.6 Terra, a mid-range version for everyday use; and GPT-5.6 Luna, a faster and more affordable option aimed at developers and businesses.

The release follows growing concerns from cybersecurity experts over the ability of advanced AI systems to identify software vulnerabilities that could potentially be exploited by hackers. Due to these concerns, OpenAI had previously provided limited preview access to trusted US-based partners at the request of the US government.

According to reports, the Trump administration approved the wider public launch after technical evaluations and discussions with OpenAI officials. The company confirmed on its official X account that global access to the GPT-5.6 models is now being expanded.

OpenAI stated that while it supports cooperation with government agencies on national security matters, it does not believe that restricted government access should become the standard process for future AI releases. The company added that it is working with US authorities to establish a transparent framework for evaluating future advanced AI systems.

Meanwhile, AI competitor Anthropic has also resumed wider access to its most advanced models after similar restrictions were lifted by US authorities.

As competition in the artificial intelligence industry intensifies, OpenAI said GPT-5.6 Terra will cost half as much as its predecessor, GPT-5.5, making it more affordable for businesses and developers.

OpenAI and Anthropic are also reportedly preparing for public stock market listings, with both companies aiming for valuations approaching $1 trillion, underscoring the growing commercial importance of the global AI race.
