North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen a series of weapons tests aboard the country's newly built naval destroyer, Kang Kon, according to state media.
The tests, conducted on Friday, included the launch of a strategic cruise missile as well as evaluations of the warship's anti-ship, anti-submarine and air defence systems. Officials also assessed the vessel's target detection, information processing, naval guns, automatic cannons and electronic warfare capabilities.
After receiving a briefing on the destroyer's combat readiness, Kim watched the missile launch and other weapons demonstrations. He praised the country's recent military advances and called for stronger efforts to boost North Korea's naval combat power and strategic deterrence.
Kim instructed military officials to complete all remaining sea trials and commission the Kang Kon into active naval service within the next two months.
The warship is the second 5,000-ton destroyer built under North Korea's naval modernization programme. Last month, Pyongyang commissioned the Choe Hyon, another destroyer in the same class, while announcing plans to deploy the Kang Kon as part of its expanding fleet.
Kim has also directed the construction of two destroyers of this class every year over the next five years and revealed plans to develop larger 10,000-ton warships.
The Kang Kon had previously suffered damage after partially capsizing during its launch ceremony last year but was later repaired.
North Korea has recently placed greater emphasis on strengthening its navy, which Kim has described as the weakest branch of the country's armed forces.
