President Bola Tinubu has flagged off road rehabilitation projects worth ₦137 billion in Borno State, describing the initiative as a major step toward improving trade, agriculture, and security in Nigeria's North-East.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the inauguration ceremony on Saturday, Tinubu said the rehabilitation of the Bama–Banki Road and the Dikwa–Gamboru–Ngala Road would restore vital transport links connecting Nigeria with Cameroon and Chad, which were disrupted by years of insurgency.
The President stressed that poor road infrastructure poses security challenges, noting that better roads would make it easier for security personnel to patrol affected communities while also improving the movement of people and goods.
President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, said his company is executing the projects under the Federal Government's Roads Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme. He revealed that the company is currently handling 12 major highway projects covering more than 1,000 kilometres nationwide, valued at about ₦3 trillion.
Minister of Works David Umahi explained that the two contracts, initially awarded in 2021 for about ₦55 billion, were later revised because of insecurity and rising construction costs. The Bama–Banki Road is now valued at ₦70 billion, while the Dikwa–Gamboru–Ngala Road will cost ₦67 billion.
Umahi said the roads would be built using concrete pavement technology to ensure greater durability, lower maintenance costs, and a longer lifespan. The projects also include bridges, traffic safety facilities, road furniture, and other supporting infrastructure.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum welcomed the projects, saying they would strengthen economic activities, improve regional trade with Chad, Cameroon, and Niger, and support the state's ongoing recovery from years of insurgency.
