At least nine police officers and 15 suspected militants were killed during a fierce overnight gun battle in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province, local authorities said on Tuesday.
According to provincial government spokesperson Shahid Rind, the violence erupted in Ziarat district after militants attacked the site of an under-construction dam. Security forces responded swiftly, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire.
Rind said the security operation resulted in the deaths of 15 suspected militants, while nine police officers, including two senior officers, lost their lives in the line of duty. The bodies of the fallen officers were taken to a nearby hospital.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, officials blamed the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for carrying out the assault.
Balochistan, Pakistan's largest province by area, has faced years of insurgent violence and militant attacks. The region is strategically important due to its rich natural resources and its role in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a major infrastructure and trade project.
Authorities have launched further security operations in the area as investigations into the attack continue.
