Kenyan authorities have stepped up security across Nairobi ahead of the annual Saba Saba protests, deploying heavily armed police officers and setting up checkpoints on major roads leading into the city.
Security has also been tightened around Parliament and other key government buildings, with officials saying the measures are intended to protect critical infrastructure and maintain public order. Authorities warned that any unlawful gatherings or acts of violence would be dealt with according to the law.
Despite the increased security presence, protest organisers say the demonstrations will go ahead as planned. They insist they have notified police of the marches and intend to rally at Parliament to demand justice over alleged extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and abductions.
The security operation has caused major traffic disruptions, particularly along Thika Road, where thousands of commuters experienced long delays. Public transport operators have also criticised the extensive police checkpoints, saying they have slowed movement across the capital.
The Saba Saba protests, held annually on July 7, commemorate Kenya's historic pro-democracy movement and have become a platform for citizens to voice concerns over governance, human rights, and accountability. This year's demonstrations are expected to draw significant public attention amid heightened political tensions.
