At least 18 people, including four police officers, were injured after explosions struck the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Tuesday while French President Emmanuel Macron was holding talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the Presidential Palace.
According to Syrian state media, the explosions occurred near the Four Seasons Hotel, where Macron was staying, and close to the Ministry of Tourism. Authorities said the blasts were caused by explosive devices planted in a vehicle near Victoria Bridge. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Videos shared online showed a burning vehicle, smoke rising over the area, and emergency responders rushing to the scene. Security forces quickly cordoned off the affected locations and launched an investigation.
The Élysée Palace said President Macron was not aware of the explosions during his meeting and continued with his scheduled engagements.
Macron arrived in Damascus on Monday, becoming the first European Union leader to visit Syria since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. His visit is focused on strengthening ties with Syria and supporting the country's reconstruction efforts, accompanied by a delegation of French business leaders.
The latest attack comes just days after another explosion at a café near Damascus' Palace of Justice killed at least 10 people and injured 21 others, raising fresh concerns about security in the Syrian capital.
