Nigeria has recorded a historic achievement after its student delegation won the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China.
The victory was announced by the Nigeria Spelling Bee on Sunday, marking the country's first-ever participation in the global competition.
Two students from Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin—Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf—also earned individual medals for their outstanding performances at the tournament.
Team Nigeria consisted of four talented students:
- Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti
- Abdurrahman Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin
- Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba
- Maryam Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin
The team qualified for the World Cup after excelling in both the Nigeria Spelling Bee and the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Before the competition, organisers described the students as ambassadors representing not only Nigeria but the entire African continent, expressing confidence in their ability to compete with the world's best young spellers.
Oluwadamilola Adeolu, the 2026 African Spelling Bee Junior Champion, had earlier said she was excited to represent Nigeria on the global stage and hoped to return home with the championship trophy.
At the African Spelling Bee Championship, Adeolu emerged Junior Champion, while Abdurrahman Yusuf finished third. Nigeria also placed second overall among participating countries.
The gold medal victory in Shanghai is being celebrated as a major milestone for Nigerian education and youth excellence, highlighting the country's growing reputation in international academic competitions.
