The Nigerian Army has trained 14,000 new soldiers as part of a 28,000-person recruitment approved by President Bola Tinubu to strengthen the country's fight against terrorism, banditry, and other violent crimes.
Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, disclosed this during an interactive session with media executives at the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration in Port Harcourt.
According to the Army Chief, the recruits received intensive training in counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, marksmanship, and other specialised combat operations before being deployed across the country. He said 6,000 soldiers graduated from the Zaria training depot, 5,000 from the Osogbo training school, while another 3,000 are expected to complete training at the Amasiri-Edda Training Depot, bringing the total number of trained recruits to about 14,000.
Shaibu also revealed that intelligence-led military operations, carried out in collaboration with other security agencies and international partners, have led to the neutralisation and arrest of 1,877 terrorists.
He added that the Army has strengthened its operational capabilities by deploying armed drones, surveillance UAVs, mine-resistant vehicles, and locally manufactured Vampire combat vehicles in various operations.
On the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State, the Army Chief assured Nigerians that rescue operations are ongoing and that security forces are making significant progress.
Shaibu reaffirmed the Army's commitment to improving troop welfare through better barracks, affordable housing schemes for retiring personnel, and expanded training opportunities. He also urged Nigerians to continue supporting the military by providing credible information, stressing that security is a shared responsibility.
