The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted more than 1.5 million tramadol pills concealed inside two trucks that entered Nigeria through the Benin Republic border, dealing a significant blow to drug trafficking networks.
According to a statement by the agency's Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the operation was carried out based on intelligence. The two trucks were found using specially constructed false-bottom compartments made of thick iron sheets to hide the illicit drugs.
The seizure comes just a week after NDLEA officers in Lagos recovered 558,900 tramadol 250mg pills hidden in a similar truck that also originated from Togo and passed through the Benin Republic.
Babafemi said the latest haul was intended for distribution in northern Nigeria and described the operation as a major success against criminal syndicates.
He added that with smuggling routes through the seaports increasingly blocked, traffickers have turned to land borders, but NDLEA continues to disrupt their operations.
The agency noted that the seizure prevents a large quantity of dangerous drugs from reaching bandits, criminal gangs, and other illegal markets, describing it as a major victory for public health, national security, and the protection of Nigerian youths.
