Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is meeting with United States President Donald Trump as Lebanon pushes for Washington's support in securing a full Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon and strengthening the Lebanese Armed Forces.
The high-level meeting comes after recent US-mediated negotiations between Lebanese and Israeli officials aimed at implementing a security agreement reached on June 26. Lebanon hopes the deal will pave the way for Israeli forces to leave occupied areas while enabling the Lebanese army to take full control of the country's south.
During Aoun's visit, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed Washington's support for the agreement, stressing that Lebanon's long-term stability depends on the government becoming the country's sole armed authority. He also emphasized the need for increased international investment to help rebuild Lebanon's economy and infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Israel has begun a phased withdrawal from selected areas under a "pilot zone" programme, with Lebanese troops deploying to towns vacated by Israeli forces and taking steps to confiscate Hezbollah weapons.
However, major challenges remain. Hezbollah has rejected direct negotiations with Israel and opposes efforts to disarm the group, while Israel insists it will not complete its withdrawal until Hezbollah is fully disarmed.
Lebanese authorities maintain that a complete Israeli withdrawal, stronger state institutions, and international financial support are essential to achieving lasting peace and security in the country.
