The Lagos State Government says it will profile and repatriate 396 beggars arrested during a statewide environmental sanitation operation aimed at improving public order and tackling illegal activities.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced on Tuesday that operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI Corps) carried out the arrests as part of the government's ongoing campaign to keep the state clean and secure.
According to Wahab, all those arrested will undergo profiling and receive necessary assistance before being handed over to the appropriate authorities for safe return to their respective states.
He explained that the exercise is part of the state's broader efforts to maintain environmental sanitation, enhance public safety, and discourage street begging across Lagos.
The Lagos State Government reiterated that street begging remains illegal under state law and reminded residents that giving alms to beggars on major highways is also prohibited. Instead, it encouraged members of the public to support the less privileged through registered charities and religious organisations.
