The body of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with the bodies of several members of his family, arrived at Mashhad's Shahid Hasheminejad International Airport on Thursday ahead of the final funeral procession and burial rites.
The arrival followed a delay caused by the large number of mourners who gathered in Iraq, where farewell ceremonies were held in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. Funeral organizers said the procession in Mashhad was rescheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. local time to accommodate the changes.
During the ceremony, Khamenei's body is expected to be carried along Imam Reza Street to the Imam Reza Shrine, where the final funeral rites and burial will take place.
The funeral ceremonies began in Tehran, where thousands of mourners, government officials, foreign dignitaries, and religious leaders paid their respects. The procession later continued in the holy city of Qom before moving to Iraq, where millions reportedly participated in farewell events in Najaf and Karbala.
The bodies were then returned to Mashhad for the final stage of the funeral, with large crowds of mourners travelling from different parts of Iran to attend the burial ceremony.
Iranian authorities say extensive security arrangements have been put in place as the final funeral rites conclude in the northeastern city.
