Nigeria's Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has revealed that bandits who abducted pupils and teachers from schools in Oyo State threatened to kill the hostages if security forces attempted to rescue them by force.
Speaking in a preview of an interview with News Central, Musa said the kidnappers were using the children as bargaining tools to demand the release of some of their commanders currently in military custody.
According to the minister, the security forces were prepared to launch an operation, but the kidnappers warned they would execute all the captives if troops advanced on their hideout.
The abduction occurred on May 15, when armed bandits kidnapped 39 pupils and seven teachers from Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, along with two other schools in Esinle, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Musa also called for stricter penalties against kidnappers and bandits, expressing support for the death penalty as a deterrent to violent crimes.
He argued that weak laws have encouraged criminal activities, stressing that offenders must face severe punishment to discourage others from engaging in kidnapping and banditry.
The government says security agencies remain committed to securing the safe release of the victims while intensifying efforts to combat insecurity across the country.
