The Kebbi State Government has announced that schools located in communities affected by bandit attacks will remain closed until security conditions improve.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Governor's Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Abdullahi Idris, the government said the decision, taken about seven months ago, was made to protect the lives of students and teachers.
According to the statement, the affected schools will only reopen when authorities are confident that learning can resume safely.
The government stressed that the safety of schoolchildren would not be compromised and warned against politicising security-related decisions.
Officials noted that Kebbi is not alone in facing insecurity, pointing out that several schools in Borno and other northern states have also remained closed due to persistent security threats.
The statement added that Governor Nasir Idris has strengthened security efforts by providing operational vehicles, motorcycles, and logistical support to security agencies while increasing the deployment of military personnel and mobile police officers.
It also revealed that the governor has held consultations with security chiefs, traditional rulers, religious leaders, academics, and fellow governors to develop lasting solutions to the security crisis.
The government further disclosed that northern governors and traditional rulers recently agreed to establish a Joint Security Fund, with each participating state expected to contribute ₦1 billion monthly to support regional security operations.
Residents, parents, and community leaders were urged to continue supporting security agencies as efforts continue to restore peace and create conditions for the safe reopening of schools.
