Israel has officially dissolved its parliament (the Knesset), paving the way for a general election on October 27, 2026, in what is expected to be a decisive vote for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's political future.
The dissolution of the 25th Knesset marks the first time since 1988 that an Israeli parliament has completed its full four-year term before being dissolved. The upcoming election is widely seen as a referendum on Netanyahu's leadership amid the country's conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.
Before adjourning, lawmakers approved the Party Funding Law, which releases state funds for political parties to begin their election campaigns. The parliament also passed several controversial bills, including reforms to media regulation and legislation granting military service exemptions to many ultra-Orthodox men.
Recent opinion polls indicate that Netanyahu's ruling Likud party is trailing the opposition. A newly formed centrist party, Yashar ("Straight"), led by former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, has gained significant public support and is emerging as a strong challenger ahead of the October vote.
Despite the political headwinds, Netanyahu has confirmed that he will seek another term as prime minister. Opposition leaders have expressed confidence that the election will bring a change in government.
Campaign activities are expected to intensify in the coming weeks as parties prepare for what could become one of Israel's most closely watched elections in recent years.
